➤ Dress UP while Sullivan selects sounds from the 80s at the V&A’s Friday Late

❚ EX-ST MARTIN’S AND WAG CLUB HOST Chris Sullivan says: “I’ll be deejay at the V&A again for next Friday’s free event. I’ll be doing a typical 80s club set from Kraftwerk to house with hip hop, rockabilly and mutant disco, to seminal electro and rare groove. It’s an evening of all sorts of shenanigans to do with the Club to Catwalk exhibition.”

The monthly Friday Late on October 25 at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum is inspired by the current exhibition Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s, which celebrates the creativity and theatricality of the capital’s dynamic fashion and club scenes. Assistant curator Kate Bethune is running a busy programme of free events, including art and design workshops, art installations, expert talks, performances and deejay sets throughout the gallery.

DIY fashionistas will discover how to make their own Scarlett Dress (named after Scarlett Cannon, 80s Cha-Cha club hostess and now “key identity” for the exhibition, seen at left) by downloading the dress pattern from the V&A’s website. An example of the toile is being displayed in the Sackler Centre on Friday evening.

Kate reports: “Our free Friday Lates tend to attract upwards of 4,000 visitors and our Club to Catwalk exhibition, London Fashion in the 1980s, continues to prove extremely popular and is averaging 5,000 visitors a week.”

➤ Book now for the Bowie finale – if you can

❚ DAVID BOWIE IS A LIVE NATIONWIDE cinema event   at 7pm on August 13 as the finale to the V&A’s successful exhibition, when special guests offer insights into the stories behind the artefacts from the Bowie Archive.

It is to be screened in 19 UK cinemas named today by Picturehouse Entertainment.  Members’ priority booking started from today Monday June 24, and the public get what’s left on Friday June 28. So if we are to judge from the V&A’s track record of Bowie-related talks and special events at the Museum itself, this will mean none at all.

V&A Director Martin Roth is deluded if he thinks – as his quote suggests in today’s announcement – that he is reaching “the widest possible audience” when tickets to these 19 tiny cinemas are on sale for four priority days to V&A Members and Picturehouse Members, before being offered to Joe Public.

The biggest cinema at Greenwich Picturehouse, for example, seats only 174 people! “Wide” that is not.

❏ Update June 24 – the Victoria and Albert Museum replies: “We will be announcing further cinemas on Friday when all tickets go on sale. It will be screened at over 200 cinemas nationwide – the first 4 days of booking are Picturehouse Cinemas only. Do check back on the website for new cinemas as we confirm them.”

❏ Shapersofthe80s comments: At a generous estimate, then, going by the Greenwich auditorium, this event might eventually be seen at 200 cinemas by up to 4,000 people. The V&A claims that the Bowie exhibition itself has received nearly 200,000 visits – so it’s an absurd imaginative leap to suggest that a further 4,000 people represent “the widest possible audience”. His marketing department should choose museum Director Martin Roth’s sound-bites for him with more care.

Tickets for Joe Public are apparently only available direct from participating cinemas – not online – from Friday 28th priced £10–£14 and do not yet appear on the museum’s map. Fans lucky enough to be in fulltime employment on Friday will thus have to wait till Saturday morning to hightail it to the selected cinema in their nearest big town. Do any of these museum people lead real lives?

Rodgers, Ferry and Kiwanuka: Stars announced for the 2013 Love Supreme Festival

❚ BRYAN FERRY IS TO BE the Saturday headliner of the first Love Supreme Jazz Festival taking place July 5–7 2013. Four stages present a mix of jazz, soul and blues against the picturesque backdrop of Glynde Place, the Elizabethan manor house in East Sussex, 11 miles from Brighton.

Ferry said: “I am looking forward to incorporating material from my latest album The Jazz Age in the set at the Love Supreme Festival. This will be the first time the Bryan Ferry Orchestra will have played live in the UK and we will be adding vocals to several of the jazz arrangements as well as being joined by members of my regular band.”

Headlining on the Sunday will be Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra who has announced that Roland Gift, the Fine Young Cannibals front-man, will be his special guest vocalist alongside Ruby Turner and Louise Marshall.

Also appearing: disco megastars Chic ft Nile Rodgers, Courtney Pine, Michael Kiwanuka, Branford Marsalis Quartet, Gregory Porter, White Mink, Portico Quartet, Roller Trio, GoGo Penguin, Robert Glasper Experiment, Andreya Triana and Naturally 7.

Courtney Pine CBE said: “Playing concerts in front of a live outdoor audience is a huge thrill for the improvising musician. The concerts feature a fantastic cast of world-class jazz musicians which I am proud and very humbled to be joining. This Love Supreme Jazz Festival will be banging!”
