❚ ALL THE REAL MARTIN KEMP tweeted last night was “#lifestories What a wonderful evening…. Thanks everyone!” Closely followed by Spandau Ballet pal Steve Norman Real tweeting: “I have arrived at the conclusion that @piersmorgan is actually a gentleman”!!! Closely followed by legendary gossip hack and TV host Piers Morgan tweeting: “Ssshhhh, you’ll ruin my reputation @SteveNormanReal”!!!

Four ropey backstage snaps were also tweeted from their respective camphones, but otherwise the Spandau camp were remaining tightlipped about what was revealed at Elstree Studios yesterday. Spandau bass player and TV star Martin (aka onetime EastEnders bad boy Steve Owen) had been a special guest for the new series of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, and the two-hour recording has yet to be edited down to its final 40 minutes for broadcast very soon.

Morgan is the notorious former editor of Britain’s tabloid Daily Mirror, currently based in the United States, whose Life Stories are famous for wringing tears from at least 11 of his celebrity interviewees in front of live audiences, spiced up with video contributions from friends and family. A sort of This Is Your Life with the gloves off.

Today Martin remained tactful about how moist his grilling became: “It was a close-run thing… But it was so much fun.”

Morgan’s 10th series for ITV starts with Coronation Street’s former termagant Bet Lynch aka Julie Goodyear in the hot seat at 9pm on Sept 20. This firecracker will also feature “revealing interviews with her ex-lovers, former co-stars and close friends” it says, so Julie must be gritting her teeth behind those scarlet lips. (Kempie was Julie’s best pal inside last year’s Celebrity Big Brother house – until almost the end, so we might see whether they’ve kissed and made up since.)

In the new series Julie Goodyear is being followed by Gloria Hunniford, Brian Blessed, Julian Clary, Peter Waterman and Beverley Callard (kidnap victim Liz McDonald in Corrie). So far no date set for Steve Owen!

➤ Shock, horror! Martin Kemp teeters on the brink of eviction from Big Brother house

❚ DA-A-A-A-Y NINE-’EEN and alpha male of the Celebrity Big Brother house Martin Kemp is in shock after becoming one of the final three housemates to be nominated for departure on Wednesday. Two of them must go. The other two attracting most votes from their rivals are Prince Lorenzo (charged with “general dullness” by Julian Clary) and former soap star Julie Goodyear, who attracted five votes for being a game-player while the younger bruvs in da house have taken to calling her Nana (wince!). Fact is: being nominated means your peer group inside the house don’t like you!

REASONS MARTIN WAS NOMINATED 3 TIMES

Celebrity Big Brother , Julian Clary

❏ Comedian Julian Clary, 53: “My second nomination is Martin for asserting his authority over me in unnecessary ways. We were all asked to sit on the sofa yesterday and I was getting a glass of water before I sat down and he said “In your own time”, the subtext of which was “Hurry up, you’re keeping me waiting”. I didn’t think it was necessary. I don’t think he needs to reaffirm his superiority over us. I quite accept that he is the master and I don’t need putting in my place.” Ouch!

Celebrity Big Brother , Coleen Nolan
❏ Singer and television presenter Coleen Nolan, 47: “My second nomination is Martin. When I’m alone with him I don’t know what to talk about. He is so laid back that you get one-word answers, and so you think, OK, I’ll go outside then… I kind of want to shove a rocket up his ass, to be honest. I love the guy: but you just need a bit of oomph.” Durr.

Ashley McKenzie , Celebrity Big Brother
❏ Olympic judo athlete Ashley McKenzie, 23: “My second nomination is Martin due to the fact he sometimes isolates himself from the group and being the last stages in Big Brother it gets quite tough and I think you need to stick to the group. It makes me feel a bit sad, it upsets me a bit.” Aaaah.

Martin Kemp, Celebrity Big Brother
❏ Afterwards in the diary room, Martin, 50, wrinkled his brow and looked puzzled: “I just hope I haven’t offended anybody, and said something wrong or something that’s upset them. It makes you think and try and work it out: what did I do wrong to someone that they would nominate me?” So you mean there was no Mister Nasty game plan after all, Mart?

❏ Verdict of Bit on the Side’s presenter Jamie East: “His big thing was he said he had a game plan and was in it to win it. He’s probably decided now’s the time to raise his head above the parapet. The thing with Julie and Julian [complaining about them smoking] with the electronic cigarette was possibly the only thing he’s done to cause any friction and it’s caused him to be up for conviction. He’s always been a massive Big Brother fan, and he’ll know that people who keep their head down will go straight the way through to the final. That was his game plan.”

NOW, AS THEY SAY, YOU DECIDE

ROMAN GUESTS ON THE AFTER-SHOW

❏ Da-a-a-a-y Twenny-Wunn: Martin’s 19-year-old son Roman guests on the discussion show after today’s main CBB episode. So what happened to the game plan Martin promised at the start? We were expecting him to turn into a scheming wheeler dealer.

Roman said: “A lot of people did, but I don’t think he would know how to cause controversy. Also, when you go into the house you so quickly forget that you’re in the game. That is the game. To keep reminding yourself that you’re in that situation the whole time is a task in itself.

“He’s just as nice at home. When your dad’s the nicest person, it’s difficult because you can’t get into an argument with him because you’ll feel bad for him! And you’ll feel guilty.”

➢ Click the video tab at CBB online… Day 21, Julie’s husband vs Martin’s son: Name that quote — Big Brother grabbed Martin’s son Roman and Julie’s husband Scott from the Bit on the Side green room last night to see if they could guess the dearests’ quotes. There are some corkers in there, but who will get the most correct?

➤ “Nice” Martin Kemp promises to make trouble on CBB but is upstaged by Bet Lynch — twice

◼ MASSIVE CHEERS GREETED Martin Kemp when he took up residence as the alpha male on this summer’s Celebrity Big Brother last night, but even while he was boasting of a secret plan for winning the sink-or-swim reality game show, he was upstaged twice. First came a classic bitch-off between two doyennes from the leading British TV soaps which saw Julie Goodyear (the feisty barmaid Bet Lynch from Coronation Street) fling a drink in the face of Cheryl Fergison (Heather Trott from EastEnders). Then came a spontaneous romp as Julie played up to randy Bet’s reputation by chasing a hot young production lad round the studio while recording a pre-launch video.

Nevertheless the bookies’ odds today were 5/2 on the cool Spandau Ballet bass player and ex-EastEnders villain Martin winning the three-week TV battle, which isn’t saying much since this season’s housemates are a right chav bunch of dummies who don’t even know you don’t call a prince Prince to his face, unless he’s a pedigree hound.

So what on earth is nice-guy and father-of-two Martin doing in this contest of cunning? “I love Big Brother,” he told the world in a video interview. “I’ve been watching it since it started, been a fan for so long. I’ve watched hours and hours of the show.”

“Da-a-ay Wunn, the bitches kick off”: seconds before Julie throws her drink in Cheryl’s face on Celebrity Big Brother, Martin has twigged that this is a stunt and starts to corpse behind his hanky. Straight after, Julian also grinned: “I don’t believe it, not for one minute.” (Screengrab © Channel 5)

Toughest thing he’s dreading, he says, is possibly having to sing. “I’m absolutely terrible at singing,” the 80s pop heart-throb admitted. “What’s hard is everybody expects that I should be able to sing because I was in the band, but they wouldn’t let me sing to save my life.”

Asked by host Brian Dowling if he had a nasty villainous plan up his sleeve, Martin said: “I have, yeah. If you’re going to go in there you’ve got to go in to win.

“My favourite shows are where it all kicks off and there are big arguments. So if nothing happens, I’ll try and wind it up. The Big Brother house is a TV studio and it is a game. I will nominate the **** off people if I think they’re too strong. I know what’s in store.”

Will Martin live to regret those words?

ON-AIR CONFESSION ABOUT MARTIN’S POP PAST

❏ Day 7 update: Talking of his career as a pop star with the band Spandau Ballet, who famously fell out badly after 10 years together, Martin said this week on Celebrity Big Brother:

Like every other band, you end up arguing about money, publishing or about women

Whatever can he have been referring to?
